Presidential Thoughts

Hello Alabama HOSA!

I wanted to take the time to speak about leadership and running for office this month. Leadership is an extremely important characteristic for members, officers, and competitors. Leadership can truly make or break an entire chapter. Leaders are essential to the success of any organization so it's important that, as members of this great organization, we make sure that we are taking the extra step and showing initiative anytime we get the chance.

Having leaders is one thing, but having passionate leaders is definitely what sets HOSA apart. I have always believed that leadership is fueled by passion, when I ran for office I said “passion is what allows you to fight for what you believe in.” As members of this great organization we have to channel our passion for healthcare and apply that to this organization. Stay the extra 30 minutes at a meeting or take on an extra community service project. You may not have instant gratification, but the impact of your actions will be noticed.

My challenge for you all is to apply your passion for HOSA and take the extra step. Maybe this extra step is running for office at the local, state, or national level. This is something I would encourage. Before I ran I was doubtful about my chances of winning. I asked myself “how can I do more to serve”? For me, the next step was running for state office. That was the best decision I have ever made. Ask yourselves...

How can I do more?

When you constantly ask yourself that question you will grow to be a great leader. As a leader, this organization relies on you to make it better.

See you all soon!

Darius Thomas, Alabama HOSA President
